Up DrikoLand Gallery » Aviation Photography » Davis-Monthan Air Force Base "Boneyard"

I just unearthed these pictures taken back in 2001. I flew out here a couple of times that year to help with some salvage work for an S-3 project I was working on, and I had a blast tooling around the place.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this facility, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is where the U.S. stores almost all of its decommisoned aircraft, mainly because of the desert weather. The dry climate allows services to "mothball" their aircraft here, and some end up being put back into service or sold to foreign militaries.

The variety of aircraft here is amazing, and I only wish my colleagues were as excited as I was to explore. I didn't get to see half as much as I would have liked... :-(

The nearby Pima Air And Space Museum has a huge amount of restored aircraft on its premises, and if I ever get around to scanning my negatives, I'll post some of the pictures I took there.

I'm quite proud of the huge panorama I stitched together from six separate pictures, but unfortunately this gallery software can't handle a file that size. However, you can take a look by at my flickr post here.

flickr also has a neat feature that allows you to see most of these pictures in a map view, as I played around in the satellite view and figured out where I took a lot of them. Pretty neat... :-)
